GREAT MINISTRY PRACTICES-Healing Through Presence

Editors Note: In June, two members of our congregation were featured on the Early Show on CBS News. Tim Groover and his 22 year old daughter, Linde, were interviewed about her winning essay for an Honor Your Father contest. Ten years ago on November 12, 2002, Brittany Lauren Groover was killed in automobile accident. Linde’s essay spoke of how her father, by example, showed their family how to heal “instead of just drowning in grief.”
Near the end of the interview Tim spoke briefly about his faith. He and his wife Beth both have been elders and leaders here at Saint Andrew. They wanted our church family to know that their ability to heal this past decade came in part because of our presence to them, in this community of faith.
Tim remembers “dreading” the night of the visitation wondering how his family “could face all these people?” The first person in the visitation line was a 13 year old, who was a dear friend of the family, and a strong force in the youth of our church. Lindsay Conrad was the first person to hug the Groovers, to smile at them, and to bless them with her presence. Two hours later she was standing in front of them again. She had gone directly from the front of the line to take her place in the back of line. And she would do it again, so that she could be the last person to comfort them. “That’s the type of love that helped our family deal with our darkest hours,” says Tim. Adds Lindsay, “It’s all I knew how to do as a 13 year old. I felt that if I was present God would feel their pain, and my pain, and be in that hole that we all felt in our hearts.”
Today Lindsay Conrad, who is a student at Austin Theological Seminary, believes there is “healing power in presence, in being present.” We asked her to write a story about the Groovers’ faith journey in the last ten years. We hope it helps us see again how being present to each other in our faith community, makes a difference in the world.
